About Us

Abdulla’s organic biogeochemistry research laboratory focuses on the fluxes, fate, and transformation of natural dissolved organic matter (DOM), as it is one of the largest reactive organic reservoirs in the global carbon cycle. DOM is one of the most complex mixtures of compounds present in nature; it is derived from various biological sources and involved in extensive physical, chemical, and biological processes. To understand and quantify the significance of these various biogeochemical processes on aquatic ecosystems, we decipher the chemical codes imprinted by these processes on the chemical structures of the DOM pool. Moreover, revealing the change in the chemical structures of DOM allows us to predict how they could affect the transformation and transportation of different anthropogenic pollutants in aquatic environments.
